Veneto gets its name from the original inhabitants of the area known as the Veneti, who were slowly assimilated into Roman culture. The food of Veneto has some similarities with its neighboring regions, like Lombardia; risotto is very popular and there are dozens of variations using anything from wild mushrooms to the region’s famous seafood. Polenta, a versatile cornmeal-based porridge, is often served alone, as a base for antipasti or as a side dish to main courses. Risi e bisi is a dish of rice and peas that is simple yet delicious. Seafood, ranging from prawns, shrimp and clams to fresh fish and eels, play an important part of the local diet and are proudly displayed in the markets and restaurants. Wild game such as rabbit, duck, pigeon and guinea fowl are also favorites.

Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc. Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). To me it looks like the calf muscle in the boot of Italy, but however you describe the Marches you will agree that it is one of Italy’s most underrated regions. Its beauty, its food and of course its wine all deserve your attention. While being very much its own entity, the Marches is also a microcosm of everything Italy has to offer. The two wines that have made the region famous are also the wines of Garofoli. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is a low yielding crisp white varietal unique to this region. Rosso Conero comes from a small outcrop of land that quickly plummets into the sea. Here they produce a tiny amount of special red entirely from the Montepulciano grape.

Casa Vinicola Gioacchino Garofoli is one of the oldest estates in the Marches and has always been at the forefront of quality wine production here. That is easy to say, but the proof is easily found in the Gambero Rosso wine guides and in the bottle when you pull the cork.
